Gelmix Infant thickener for breast milk and formula

Gelmix is a thickener for breast milk and infant formula that promotes healthier, happier feeding.  It facilitates the retention of nutrients of infant feeds when thickening is recommended for spit-up or swallowing difficulties, such as gastroesophageal reflux (GERD) and oropharyngeal dysphagia.

Gelmix is a tasteless, odorless, off-white fine powder that dissolves into lukewarm liquid and produces a smooth, thickened consistency.   Most liquids can be prepared up to 24 hours in advance & rewarmed for feeding.

Gelmix is specifically formulated for pediatric use and recommended for healthy babies with normal spit-up and swallowing difficulties. Gelmix is safe for infants born term (> 37 weeks) who weigh at least 6 lbs.  It is not recommended for preterm infants until they are 2 weeks corrected age (42 weeks postmenstrual age) and weigh over 6 lbs. Infants over 1 year can transition up to PuraThick organic thickener, which can be mixed with cold or warm liquids..

Gelmix is hypoallergenic, meaning it is free of corn, whey, gluten, soy, dairy and any of the common allergens.  Gelmix is also GMO Free, USDA Organic & Kosher Organics certified. It consists of three ingredients:  Organic Tapioca Maltodextrin, Organic Carob Bean Gum and Calcium Carbonate. Carob bean gum has been used in Europe for decades as a thickener in the preparation of infant formula.

Do not use for infants under 6 pounds or born preterm currently under a corrected age of 2 weeks (aka 42 weeks postmenstrual age).  Do not use if galactosemia or allergy to galactomannans is suspected.

May cause gassiness and loose stools at start.  This usually subsides on its own within 1-2 weeks of use or by reducing amount used.

Gelmix was designed as a greatly improved alternative to thickening with cereals.  Cereals do not effectively thicken breast milk and they displace the natural nutritional balance of baby's diet.

Gelmix vs Baby Cereal

Always consult a medical professional before thickening liquids to ensure it is appropriate for your child's individual needs.  If thickening is recommended to reduce spit-ups, a slightly thick consistency is usually effective.  Start with one scoop Gelmix (1.2g) per 3-4 fl oz (90-120 ml) and increase as recommended.

If thickening is recommended due to swallowing difficulties, carefully follow your healthcare provider's instructions on which consistency to safely thicken up to.

Gelmix comes in a wide, easy to use, resealable jar with a 1.2g measuring scoop. Tightly recap the jar between uses and store in a cool, dry place, protected from heat and light.  Gelmix is also available in convenient single serving stick packs.

Add 2.4g (2 Scoops or 1 Stick Pack) per 3-4 fl oz (90-120 ml)
Each jar includes a 1/2 serving scoop (1.2g), equivalent to 1/2 tsp.
Each single serving stick pack includes 2.4g of thickening powder.

Follow these steps to mix Gelmix with breast milk, formula or water:

  1. Wash your hands thoroughly with soap and warm water.
  2. Pour desired amount of lukewarm liquid (about 100°F) into bottle.  Freshly expressed breast milk at body temperature is sufficient.
  3. Sprinkle in Gelmix powder following Usage Recommendations.
  4. Cap and shake well for about 30 seconds, until powder is completely dissolved.  Work quickly to avoid clumps.
  5. Wait 5-10 minutes until desired consistency is reached.  Mix again before feeding.  Always test temperature before feeding.

Most liquids can be prepared up to 24 hours in advance & rewarmed for feeding.  If served cold, the consistency will be thicker.

Note:  Gelmix may cause gassiness and loose stools at start.  This usually subsides on its own within 1-2 weeks of use or by reducing the amount used.

The Non-Insured Health Benefits (NIHB) program provides benefits for Gelmix 125g Jars as a Thickening Agent under DIN 95900190.

Printable Mixing Guide-Breast Milk
Printable Mixing Guide-Formula

Always follow Health Canada and CDC guidelines on safe handling and storing of breast milk.  Breast milk tends to be thinner than formula, needing more thickener.  Use the higher Useage Recommendation to achieve desired consistency of 2.4g per 4 oz (120 ml) for Slightly Thick, or 2.4g per 3 oz (90 ml) for Mildly Thick.

For best results, mix Gelmix with freshly expressed milk at body temperature.  In a clean, sealed container, the mixture may sit at room temperature up to 4 hours or in the refrigerator up to 24 hours.  The thickened mixture is also freeze-thaw stable and can be stored frozen for up to 4 months.

Gelmix may also be mixed with previously frozen or thawed milk, however once breast milk is brought to room temperature or warmed after storing in the refrigerator or freezer, it should be used within two hours.  According to the CDC, breast milk should not be rewarmed more than once.

Always follow manufacturer's guidelines on safe handling and storage of formulas.  Elemental formulas tend to be thinner than regular infant formulas.

Thickened water may be stored in a clean, sealed container at room temperature for up to 24 hours.  Then, just mix in the powder formula when ready to feed.

Use prepared infant formula within one hour from when feeding begins.  If you do not start to use the prepared infant formula within 1 hour, immediately store the bottle in the fridge and use it within 24 hours.

Gelmix is not intended for use with pre-thickened formulas or in addition to other thickening products.

What is Gelmix made of?
Gelmix is a USDA organic thickener for liquids. Its ingredients include organic tapioca maltodextrin (a starch), organic carob bean gum (a vegetable gum) and calcium carbonate.

Does Gelmix contain any common allergens?

No, Gelmix is free of all common allergens. Gelmix does not contain corn, soy, wheat, gluten, lactose or casein. Allergies to galactomannans are rare, however if it is suspected, do not use Gelmix.

Is Gelmix manufactured in the USA?

Yes, Gelmix is manufactured at a USDA organic certified GMP plant in South Florida. The USDA seal means that Gelmix follows the National Organic Program, which means less contamination with potentially harmful chemicals and no GMOs. Gelmix also undergoes strict manufacturing testing.

Why is it necessary to heat up liquids before mixing in Gelmix?
It is required to warm liquids to allow Gelmix to dissolve entirely and bind with the liquid, ensuring a lasting viscosity. For best results, warm the liquid to between 95°F-110°F before mixing in Gelmix. Freshly expressed breast milk at body temperature (around 98.6°F) will suffice.

What kinds of liquids will Gelmix thicken?
Gelmix will thicken any liquids that can be warmed first. If you prefer your beverages cold, just warm the liquid to mix with Gelmix, then refrigerate for up to 24 hours.

What do I do if Gelmix is clumping?
Clumping is sometimes caused by overheating the liquid, but the most common cause for clumping is the way the powder comes out of the scoop.  We recommend “sprinkling” the Gelmix from the scoop, rather than dropping a compressed scoop of powder into the milk. What can happen is the milk starts to bind with the compressed scoop of powder and creates a bubble at the top of the liquid that can be difficult to mix in just by swirling. Sprinkling the powder out of the scoop makes it easier to mix just by swirling, and gently shaking the bottle is also effective at getting any clumps out.

How thick can Gelmix make liquids?
For term born infants and children under 3 years old, Gelmix easily achieves Slightly Thick (aka Thin Nectar) and Mildy Thick (aka Nectar)  viscosity.

Moderately Thick (aka Honey) liquids are not recommended for infants less than 1 year old, as they are more difficult to pass through a nipple and may increase risk of dehydration due to poor oral intake.

Is it safe to warm breast milk?  How should I do it?
Gelmix mixes best in liquids warmed between 95-110°F.  Freshly expressed breast milk at body temperature (around 98.6°F) will suffice. Thawed breast milk can be safely brought back to that temperature by placing it in a bottle and then placing the bottle in a glass with hot water until lukewarm. Breast milk should not be warmed more than once.

Can I mix breast milk ahead of time with Gelmix?
We do not recommend mixing breast milk and Gelmix in advance. In order to activate Gelmix, the milk has to be warmed, but in order to preserve the nutrients in breast milk it should not be warmed twice.  Breast milk mixed with Gelmix may be stored in a sealed container at room temperature (up to 77°F) for up to 3 hours.

What is the best way to mix Gelmix with breast milk that does not involve shaking?
Gelmix will dissolve in breast milk at body temperature (freshly expressed or warmed), so you just need to swirl it gently to mix Gelmix in thoroughly. Although vigorous shaking could potentially take away the natural qualities of proteins present in breast milk, such as lysozyme and other proteins, gently swirling does not exert enough force to break the amino acid bonds of those proteins.

Is it safe to heat up formula?
According to formula manufacturers, the temperature required to dissolve Gelmix is not high enough to affect the nutrients in formula. However, they recommend against heating up formulas containing probiotics. Always follow your formula manufacturer’s instructions on heating and reheating formula.

Can I mix formula ahead of time with Gelmix?
Most formulas can be mixed in advance with Gelmix and the mixture will remain thick after they are mixed. Always follow your formula’s preparation and storage instructions. Our suggestion is that you use about 1/3 less Gelmix per bottle because it the mixture will gradually thicken slightly over time.

For powder formulas, you can also prepare just the water and Gelmix in advance, and then add formula when ready to feed.  Gelmix continues to thicken liquids over time, so reducing concentration may be necessary (approx 1/3 less Gelmix).  Gelmix + water can be stored in a clean sealed container at room temperature for up to 24 hours.

What if my infant experiences gassiness or loose stools when starting Gelmix?
Gelmix contains natural fiber, and transient gassiness is a common side effect among infants using Gelmix for the first time. Gassiness usually subsides within two weeks of use or by reducing the amount used. Always consult a physician if your infant exhibits any signs of dehydration.

Do I need to change the nipple size for thickened feeds?
Check nipple flow, as it may be necessary to change the nipple size for thickened feeds. If your infant appears to be working too hard to get the milk out of the bottle, try one size bigger. Not all babies have the same strength or drive, so it is not an exact science. For AR or half-nectar thick, Dr. Browns #2 or Y-Cut Nipple is popular.

The label on Nutramigen says it should not be heated. Can I use Gelmix with it?
Nutramigen LGG contains a type of probiotic that cannot withstand heat, if you want to preserve this probiotic, Gelmix should not be used with this type of Nutramigen. Nutramigen Lipil’s manufacturer says it is safe to heat up to 100.0°F; at this temperature Gelmix should dissolve as long as the bottle is mixed properly.

Can Gelmix be used with premature infants?
No, it is not recommended for preterm infants until they are 2 weeks corrected age (42 weeks postmenstrual age) and weigh over 6 lbs.  Gelmix is safe for infants born term (>37 weeks) who weigh at least 6 lbs.
